Here is an overview of the Bloomsday events that are taking place all over the world:

Bloomsday in Cluainín / Manorhamilton

A very interesting finding occurred. It seems Manorhamilton is mentioned in chapter 15 of Ulysses, “Nighttown”, which as it turns out is what the local theatre practioners unwittingly chose to perform.  The mention is in relation to how well a particular woman looked. She is described amongst other things as the “The Dowager Duchess of Manohamilton“. Therefore the winner of our best dressed woman competition will now be honoured this title. We’re now have to find a suitable quote for the title for the best dressed man.

The events will centre on a city art gallery, and will feature music, readings, a film show, and talks on Joyce.

Celebrate Bloomsday in Pula, Croatia!

Think everyday life’s boring and trivial? You’re so wrong. Tired of the uninventive, semiliterate social network correspondence you’re surrounded with? Full of thoughts and feelings of your own, but can’t quite word them out? Go back to the classics. That’s what they’re here for. You’ll find they talk about just the things you need to hear.

What? Bloomsday: lectures, screenings, tours dedicated to the life and works of James Joyce, especially “Ulysses”, discussion, booze, dance. “I ain’t got time for a 900 page book!” That’s okay, we’ll read it for you! Well, parts of it. Public readings of Joyce’s “Ulysses” will be held by the old and the young, the wise and the foolish, those who have read Ulysses several times over and those who have only read parts of it once. All taking part in a global party to honour a slower-paced era when giants like Joyce had the time and will to put effort and care unimaginable today into their work, making it eternal.

From Tokyo to Sydney,San Francisco to Paris, Trieste to… Northampton, dozens of cities around the globe hold their own Bloomsday festivities. The celebrations usually include readings as well as staged re-enactments and street-side improvisations of scenes from the story.

To celebrate that special day, known as Bloomsday, the Irish Community Arts Project will present a reading by invited literary figures at the graveside of Lucia Anna Joyce who died in Northampton in 1982.
