Dublin’s Cinemas of Old

Back in November we shared this lovely short documentary about Dublin’s old ‘picture houses’, as described by the Dublin residents that attended them back in the day. James Joyce famously founded the Volta Cinema, Ireland’s first dedicated cinema, on Mary Street in 1909. Unfortunately, only a year later Joyce was contacted regarding closing the cinema and it was deemed to be a failure.

Joyce’s own cinematic failings aside though, this is a lovely piece and well worth a watch!
