Cities in Literature and Music – Autumn/ Winter 12 Week Course

September 19, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

€120 – €140

Join us this Autumn/Winter at the James Joyce Cultural Centre where, led by Dr. Caroline Elbay, our Lifelong Learning programme presents CITIES IN LITERATURE AND MUSIC. This is a series of talks, music, and guest lectures on the varied roles that major cities have played in both literary and musical works of different eras and genres. Cities include Dublin, London, Paris, Prague, Cordoba, Trieste, Venice and New York.

Together with exploring the concept of ‘The City’ through commentators such as Italo Calvino (Invisible Cities) and Jonathan Raban (Soft City), the course will cover Dublin and Trieste with James Joyce’s Dubliners and Giacomo Joyce; and Dermot Bolger’s Celtic Tiger exposé, Tanglewood. We will see Paris through Gaston Leroux’s eyes in his Phantom of the Opera; and Cordoba through Prosper Merimee’s Carmen. London will be explored through Virginia Woolfe’s Mrs. Dalloway and R.L. Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The course will then cover Prague with Kafka’s The Trial and Utz by Bruce Chatwin. Venice will be explored through the intricate nuances of Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice, before we continue to New York as seen through the eyes of Saul Bellow’s Herzog.

Musical explorations of these cities will include works by M.W. Balfe, Thomas Moore, Georges Bizet, Antonio Vivaldi, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Bedrich Smetana, Antonin Dvorak, and George Gershwin (to name but a few).

Looking forward to seeing you on our literary and musical odyssey this coming Autumn/Winter at the Dublin James Joyce Cultural Centre.
