Culture Night 2019 at The James Joyce Cultural Centre

Culture Night is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts. This year, it will take place on Friday 20th September 2019. On Culture Night, arts and cultural organisations with venues of all shapes and sizes, including the James Joyce Centre, extend their opening hours to allow for increased access to the public. Special and unique events and workshops are specifically programmed at participating locations and everything is available free of charge. 

Get closer to James Joyce, one of Ireland’s greatest modern writers. Read the opening episode of Ulysses from 4-6pm. Join an “Introducing James Joyce” talk and walking tour at 5.30pm and 7.00pm. Enjoy a behind the scenes tour of the Centre, complete with readings from Joyce’s works, at 5.15pm, 6.15pm, 7.15pm and 9.15pm. Experience “Songs of Joyce” performed by delightful sirens Sinead Murphy and Darina Gallagher at 8pm in the stunning Kenmare Room. 

The James Joyce Cultural Centre, situated in a stunning Georgian townhouse, offers the visitor historical and biographical information about James Joyce and his influence in literature. See the door to the famous No 7 Eccles Street from “Ulysses”, a recreation of his living quarters, art exhibitions and more that bring the author and his works to life.

Ulysses Reading Group 4pm – 6pm 

Get closer to James Joyce, one of Ireland’s greatest modern writers by reading the opening episode of UlyssesWhether you’ve always wanted to read Ulysses or if it’s your most cherished book, you’ll find the reading group relaxed and welcoming. It will be a unique experience to read aloud this iconic work of fiction together. Copies of Ulysses are available to borrow on Culture Night or bring along your own well-thumbed favourite. Participants are invited to read a page – what better way to spend your Culture Night?

“Introducing James Joyce” Talk and Walking Tour 5.30pm & 7.00pm 

Don’t know the first thing about Joyce? Wondering what all the fuss is about? Or do you just want to know more about one of Ireland’s most recognisable literary figure? Explore Joyce’s life and work through an interactive presentation followed by a short walking tour. Learn about Joyce’s life in Dublin, his literary and political influences and the books that made his reputation as one of the most talented and radical writers of the last century. Stops on the tour include Joyce’s old school Belvedere College; the inner city neighbourhoods brought to life in Ulysses; and Hardwicke Street, where Joyce lived for a time and went on to immortalise in his fiction. The talk and walk takes about 60 minutes.

James Joyce Centre Tour 5.15pm, 6.15pm7.15pm, 9.15pm. 

Enjoy a tour of the Centre with one of our informative tour guides, complete with readings from Joyce’s books. Explore the Centre’s temporary and permanent exhibitions as they interpret and illuminate various aspects of Joyce’s life and work, check out the table where Joyce worked on Finnegans Wakesee a recreation of his living quarters and rap at the door of No. 7 Eccles Street, Leopold and Molly Bloom’s home in Ulysses. The tour takes about 40 minutes.

Experience Songs of Joyce performed by delightful sirens Sinead Murphy and Darina GallagherSinead and Darina are best known for their award-winning show Songs of Joyce – a musical extravaganza with songs drawn from the life and works of James Joyce. It has toured internationally to critical acclaim including Boston, New York, Budapest, Prague, San Sebastian, China and Moscow. Since 2010, they have created a number of musical performances based on Joyce’s major works – DublinersFinnegans Wake and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
