“James Joyce and Revolutions: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Havana 1964” – Teresa Caneda Cabrera

The James Joyce Centre is delighted to welcome Dr. Teresa Caneda Cabrera for the April instalment in our Spring / Summer 2019 Lecture series. Dr. Caneda Cabrera’s talk will focus on the importance of the 1964 Cuban translation of Joyce’s novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man to the Cuban independence movement. In their search for prototypes which could help legitimate the cultural and political projects of the revolution, Cuban intellectuals of the 1960s invoked James Joyce as a role model. The new climate of (re)imagined reciprocities between Ireland and Cuba favoured the publication of the 1964 Cuban translation of Joyce’s novel and positioned Joyce as a role model for Cuban revolutionary writers. Dr. Caneda Cabrera’s talk will consider how, through themes of anti-imperialistic struggles, historical and political affiliation, and legacies of shared experiences, Joyce is introduced to Cuban readers as a model, “a writer who has much in common with the social circumstances of Latin-American writers”.
Teresa Caneda Cabrera is a Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Vigo (Spain), currently visiting associate professor, at UCD School of English, Drama and Film. She is the author of La estética modernista como práctica de resistencia en A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and has co-edited Vigorous Joyce: Atlantic Readings of James Joyce. She organized the 19th Conference of the Spanish James Joyce Society and sits on the Editorial Board of European Joyce Studies. She lectured at the Annual Trieste Joyce School (2009) and participated in the Zurich International Annual Workshop (2008). She has presented papers at all the International James Joyce Symposia since 2006.
Teresa’s work on Joyce has appeared in journals such as the James Joyce Quarterly, Papers on Joyce, Interventions, Translation Studies and Translation and Literature. More recently she has contributed with a chapter on “Joyce and the Aesthetics of Silence” to the volume James Joyce’s Silences (Wawrzycka and Zanotti, eds. Bloomsbury: 2018) and has co-edited, a special issue of the journal Atlantic Studies 15:3 (2018) on “Atlantic Communities: Translation, Mobility, Hospitality”. Since January 2018 she is the Principal Investigator of the research project “Inconvenient Truths: Cultural Practices of Silence in Contemporary Irish Fiction” funded by Spain’s Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness.
