Old Bottles, New Wine: Re-Tasting Irish Literature – Autumn/Winter 2019 Course

October 16 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, repeating until December 4, 2019

Join us this Autumn/Winter at the James Joyce Cultural Centre for our Lifelong Learning Programme led by Dr. Caroline Elbay. “Old Bottles, New Wine: Re-Tasting Irish Literature,” is a twelve week course which will address identity, politics, memory, and hidden histories in the writing of James Joyce, Sean O’Casey, Brendan Behan, Marina Carr and many others.

Over the duration of the course, we will consider themes such as identity, politics (including class and gender), memory (personal, cultural, and inherited), and hidden histories by considering both original texts and adaptations. Participants will be encouraged to actively engage in exploring these concepts. Topics will include the language issue; censorship, politics; class; woman as ‘other’ in Irish history and culture; the Revolutionary period (centenary of both the War of Independence and Dáil Eireann); and how Ireland is represented in literature and theatre today.

We are also delighted to host guest speaker, historian and author Liz Gillis as well as performances of The Dubliners Dilemma by Declan Gorman and An Evening with Brendan Behan by Peter Sheridan.

Looking forward to seeing you on our literary and musical odyssey this coming Autumn/Winter at the James Joyce Cultural Centre.
