University of Chicago Graham School Tour

The James Joyce Centre was delighted to lead a unique week-long literary tour of Dublin organised by the University of Chicago Graham School on 15-20 September 2025. The tour was an immersive series of seminars, performances and adventures throughout Dublin. Some of the place we saw were North Inner City and Quays, the James Joyce Tower, Sweny’s Pharmacy, Howth Castle ‘and Environs’, Glasnevin Cemetary and Dalkey Castle.

The tour ‘walked into eternity’ on Sandymount Strand, stepped into the footsteps of Leopold Bloom at No. 7 Eccles Street, studied with Stephen Dedalus in Belvedere College SJ, and saw rare editions and manuscripts of Joyce’s work in the Museum of Literature Ireland and the National Library of Ireland. We ended the tour with a pint (or two) at the Gravediggers Pub.

Culture Night/Oíche Chultúir 2024

The James Joyce Centre was proud host a special late evening to celebrate Culture Night/Oíche Chultúir 2024.

The James Joyce Centre is situated in a gorgeous 18th-century Georgian townhouse. On Friday, 20 September 2024 from 6 to 8pm, visitors explored our house and exhibitions, including:

  • Mamalujo: A history of the publication of Finnegans Wake.
  • Three art installations based on Ulysses, including “Ulysses: Illustrations” by Remi Rousseau.
  • Film screenings.
  • Ulysses VR: A virtual reality headset based on scenes from Ulysses.
  • The door from No. 7 Eccles Street, the home of Leopold and Molly Bloom in Ulysses.
  • Various manuscripts and materials from Joyce’s time.
  • The beautiful plasterwork by 18th-century stuccodore Michael Stapleton, a beautiful example of high-Georgian architecture.

The Joyce Centre also offered free guided tours of the house every half-hour from 6 to 8pm. Click this link to find out more.

‘Circe’ from Ulysses Murals (1996) by Paul Joyce

The James Joyce Centre was proud to offer an alternative exploration of his work via a tour of the museum on Saturday, 27 April 2024 at 2pm. In this one-hour tour, assistant Monica Gónzalez Galindo explored 35 North Great George’s Street as we read passages from Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Ulysses under LGBTIQA+ lenses.

James Joyce’s work is a product of an era where reflections about gender and sexuality started to reach the general population. Moreover, the fact that Joyce spent most of his life in continental Europe allowed him to live in places where those manifestations were more noticeable than in Ireland. The combination of these circumstances makes Joyce’s work sparkle with a few characters who can be considered part of the queer spectrum.
